LCA is an abbreviation for life cycle assessment. An LCA compiles and evaluates all inputs, outputs and potential environmental impacts of a product or system (for example, a building) throughout its life cycle, i.e. from the extraction of raw materials to the final disposal. This is often called “cradle to grave”.
In an LCA, a wide range of environmental impacts is calculated, and the environmental profile of the product or system can be documented. The result also ensures a solid basis on which decisions can be taken. An LCA can be used, among other things, for:
What are the environmental impacts when choosing different materials or solutions?
How does your product or service affect the environment throughout its life cycle? By identifying the areas where the environmental impact is most significant, you can prioritise environmental efforts and take environmental improvement measures where you can achieve the greatest effect.
An LCA is a tool to document the green initiatives in your internal and external communication. Collecting LCA data can also form the basis for various environmental certifications.
An LCA can be used to assess the extent to which new business models and models for a circular economy are sustainable in the short or long term.
In addition to the fact that LCA can be used to identify potential environmental improvements in products and services, LCA can be used as decision support both politically and industrially.
